May 17 - 23, 2009 is National Small Business Week, a national celebration of small business proclaimed by the President of the United States for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). This year marks the 46th annual proclamation of National Small Business Week. Celebratory events will be held in Washington D.C. from May 17-19 to honor outstanding small businesses from throughout the nation.

In Congress, the Chairwoman and Ranking Member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) issued a jointly authored op-ed entitled The State of Small Businesses During National Small Business Week. The Senators focused on the importance of small businesses to the economy, the work the Senate has done on behalf of the nation's small businesses and what work is left to be done. "We are both committed to working together to provide entrepreneurs with the necessary tools to lead us out of this recession," they write. "We must focus our energy on strengthening our nation's small businesses, which are key to revitalizing America's economic prosperity."
