Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe (D) appointed former state legislator Jay Bradford to serve as the state's new insurance commissioner. Bradford replaces Julie Benafield Bowman, who resigned effective December 31.  Bradford, who served two decades in the Arkansas legislature, also worked in the insurance industry, including 30 years as founder and chairman of First Arkansas Insurance Group.

Beebe's predecessor as governor, Mike Huckabee (R), appointed Bowman to the post in December 2004. At the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), Bowman most recently served as vice chairwoman of the Market Regulation and Consumer Affairs (D) Committee and vice chairwoman of the Information Resources Management (H) Committee.
