It seems like this August, more than ever before, Americans have taken advantage of Congress's August recess to make their voices heard. And while healthcare reform has gotten all of the headlines, that's just one of the issues before Congress this year that will affect professional insurance agents.

Here's a summary of the issues PIA is most concerned with this year:

1. Healthcare Reform: The future role of insurance agents and the private market are on the chopping block. Tell Congress to keep PIA's Healthcare Principles in any reform legislation that may emerge. Click here to send a healthcare letter.

2. Federal Regulation: Congress is debating federalizing the entire insurance industry. Gutting the state regulatory structure and turning it over to a federal bureaucrat is not the answer! Click here to send a letter to Congress.

3. Natural Disaster: Congress is playing particularly close attention to natural disasters and how to cope with them. Tell Congress to support mitigation efforts and not to create programs what will compete with the private market. Click here to send a natural catastrophe letter to Congress.

4. Flood Insurance: The National Flood Insurance Program is once again set to expire in a few short weeks. Tell Congress to extend the program and make the necessary reforms to ensure a successful, sound future. Click here to send a flood insurance letter.

5. Crop Insurance: A successful crop insurance program is essential for this country and continued budget cuts will have detrimental effects on the program. Congress is currently debating making considerable cuts to the program which would directly affect insurance agents. Click here to tell Congress not to make unnecessary cuts.

As you can see, this year more than most, the issues that are being debated on Capitol Hill WILL greatly impact independent insurance agents. You know your elected officials are hearing from the opposition and the big money interests, so it's up to each of us to make sure they hear from their local, Main Street agents, too. That's you!
