PIA's annual nationwide in-district advocacy event, Political Involvement and Advocacy Month (PIA Month), is officially underway. This year's legislative issues are more critical to PIA members than ever. Topping the list is health care reform.

During the last part of July, it became evident that health care reform legislation would not see definitive action prior to the August recess.  In the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said there will not be a floor vote on health care reform legislation until September. The Senate is in session through the remainder of  this week, after which senators will head home to their districts, where many will be seeking the opinions of their constituents on this important issue.

The House has already adjourned, with most congressmen having already returned to their home districts. House Democratic leaders and committee heads will be working to find a way to resolve differences in two versions of the bill that have been approved by various House committees. H.R. 3200, America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, has been approved by two committees - Education and Labor, and Ways and Means. A compromise measure, crafted by fiscally conservative House Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committee who had opposed the original bill over cost concerns, was approved late July 31 by a 31-28 vote.

This year's District Lobbying Day was moved back to Tuesday, August 18 due to the Senate remaining in session past PIA's originally scheduled date of August 5. If you have already scheduled an in-District visit with your congressman or woman for this Wednesday August 5, you should double-check the status of your appointment. You may find that your meeting is still on, but check to be sure, as your appointment may need to be rescheduled.

Of course, the date we announce for District Lobbying Day is always a target date - we realize that PIA members schedule their appointments when their Members of Congress can accommodate them on their individual schedules. If you are rescheduling, please let us know by emailing Mike Becker at mikebe@pianet.org.

What It Means to Agents:  Now is the time for all PIA agents to get in touch with their Members of Congress and advocate! PIA National is asking all PIA members to visit their Members of Congress during the August recess. We hope each U.S. Representative and Senator is overwhelmed by visits, scheduled in advance, and online communications from PIA members.

This is your chance to talk about issues that concern you as an independent insurance agent and small businessperson. In addition, if you are interested in supporting a pro-insurance, pro-business member of congress or candidate who is running for national office, this is a great time to get involved in election campaigns. Make sure you get involved and do your part! Click here to find out how.
