PIA participated in the summer national meeting of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in Minneapolis June 13-16. A range of critical issues were discussed, including producer licensing, federal regulation, health insurance and managed care, and natural disaster preparedness. PIA National Assistant Vice President, Regulatory Affairs David Eppstein, Esq. attended.

In the coming days, PIA will report on recent achievements in state regulation, aided by the efforts of PIA members. PIA National and our affiliates will continue working with the NAIC as part of a nationwide effort to modernize producer licensing, and we need the participation of the regulators in this nationwide effort. We will continue to assist departments in getting the right legislation adopted quickly.

Most states have adopted the NAIC Producer Licensing Model Act, but some states have changed the model in such a way that unnecessarily drives up costs without enhancing consumer protections. All jurisdictions must adopt the Producer Licensing Model Act and interpret it in a uniform manner. During this process, we will be working with regulators through our affiliates, to identify uniformity standards where states still need to achieve full compliance.

A full report on the NAIC summer meetings will be featured on PIANET next week.
