Local insurance agents serving Main Street America have generally been riding out the current economic adversity because of the advantages they bring to the marketplace. That's the gist of an article in the New York Times that focuses on local insurance agencies and how they are doing in the current economic slump.

The article notes that independent agencies are having to scramble to keep up with all the changes in the marketplace. It also points out that smaller agencies are facing increased competition from larger carriers who are trying to "reach down" and attract smaller clients they didn't seek when times were better.
