2010 PIA Federal Legislative Summit Is This Week: Members of PIA will bring Main Street to Capitol Hill this week as they converge on our nation's capital for the 2010 PIA Federal Legislative Summit. The summit is being held March 17-18.

This year's summit occurs as many issues with the potential to affect agents' bottom lines are in focus on Capitol Hill," said PIA National President Jon D. Spalding. "We will be meeting with our Members of Congress as they debate issues such as regulatory reform, healthcare reform, natural catastrophe policy, flood insurance and proposed revisions to the crop insurance industry's Standard Reinsurance Agreement. Our members will be addressing all of these issues with lawmakers."

On Wednesday March 17, the PIA Federal Legislative Summit begins with an orientation session followed by an in-depth legislative briefing conducted by PIA government affairs staffers, held at the Marriott Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia, PIA's headquarters hotel.

During the briefing, the PIA National Government Affairs Committee will honor the 2010 PIA Legislator of the Year, Congressman Charlie Melancon. A conservative Blue Dog Democrat, Melancon represents Louisiana's 3rd Congressional District covering much of the southern part of the state. Melancon is a former insurance agent and a former member of PIA.

On Thursday March 18, the day begins with a kickoff breakfast held at the Capitol Hill Club. The breakfast program will feature a keynote address by former Congressman Tom Davis (R-Va.). Davis is President & CEO of the centrist Republican Main Street Partnership and from 1988 through 2002, he was Chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).

FLS attendees then head to the House and Senate for a full day of scheduled meetings with lawmakers in their offices. At day's end, a reception for all summit participants will be followed by the annual fundraising and awards dinner of the PIA Political Action Committee (PIAPAC). Those attending the dinner will hear from Peter Earnest, the founding executive director of the International Spy Museum and a 35-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

PIA would like to thank the 2010 FLS Gold Level sponsors, The Hartford, Travelers and The PIA Partnership; and the 2010 Silver Level sponsors, Liberty Mutual Agency Markets, Motorists Insurance Group and Progressive for their generous contribution to this year's event.
