Alabama Governor-elect Robert Bentley (R), who campaigned as a strong critic of the federal health care law, said Alabama will set up and run its own health insurance exchange, a key component of the law. On the campaign trail, Bentley said he would look for ways for Alabama to legally reject mandates in the Affordable Care Act. But now, as he approaches inauguration in January, Bentley said that where it provides a choice between state or federal management of a program, he'll choose state control.

"If we don't do it, then they [the federal government] will do it, so this gives us the opportunity to come up with some really good ideas and I want to be at the forefront of that in Alabama," Bentley said. He added he would still personally favor the health care law be repealed, but until then, he is preparing for its implementation.
