During the October 3 PIA National Board of Directors meeting, National Director Richie Clements of PIA of Louisiana reminded his colleagues that for the first time ever, a former PIA member could become a United States Senator. Charlie Melancon, a conservative Democrat, is running against incumbent Sen. David Vitter. Melancon, currently a member of Congress, was named the 2010 PIA National Legislator of the Year in recognition of his support for professional insurance agents in Congress.

Melancon was instrumental in adding language to the new healthcare law that guarantees that licensed professional insurance agents will be able to sell policies through the new health insurance exchanges. Prior to that, licensed agents would have been banned from participating.

After the law passed, Melancon put together a bipartisan coalition of 25 members of the House - eight Democrats and 17 Republicans - asking federal health regulators to ensure a role for licensed insurance agents in the web portal that will be used to aid consumers in comparing coverage options.  This is another example of the value of having a former agent bring the agent perspective to Capitol Hill as a member of Congress.

Melancon is a successful small business owner and former PIA member. He joined PIA in 1982 and was active in the association until running for the Louisiana House of Representatives. He currently represents Louisiana's 3rd Congressional District covering much of the southern part of the state.

"Charlie Melancon is someone who possesses a rare commodity on Capitol Hill: good old fashioned common sense," said Richie Clements when the PIA award was presented. "Charlie knows that common sense exists on Main Street, USA - not on Wall Street and certainly not in Washington, D.C.," Clements said. "Charlie is a good guy. He shares our values. He's one of us."

Clements urged PIA members to support fellow PIA member Charlie Melancon in his bid for the U.S. Senate. For more information, check out Charlie's campaign website here.
