Virginia Deputy Insurance Commissioner Jacqueline K. Cunningham will be promoted to the top job January 1, after the retirement of long-time commissioner Alfred W. Gross.

Cunningham has led the life and health division of Bureau of Insurance since 2004. She has worked for the bureau, part of the State Corporation Commission, since 1993, when she was hired as a senior market examiner. She advanced to principal market examiner in 1996 and chief market examiner in 2000. While Virginia has filed a lawsuit to overturn the federal health reform law, Cunningham has worked with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners on regulations and procedures for implementing the federal healthcare law.
