PIA National President Jon D. Spalding sent a letter to Money Magazine taking issue with an article it published on homeowners insurance. The article suggested consumers shop around for the best deal - which is always good advice - but only recommended doing so by visiting two websites of insurance aggregators.

"A much better way [to shop for insurance] is to consult a local professional insurance agent who is a member of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents," writes Spalding. "Our agents work with their customers to determine their needs and provide them with a broad array of insurance choices. The customer then makes the final decision. This enables better informed insurance purchasing decisions, while avoiding the pitfalls of 'one-size-fits-all' solutions imposed by one-stop carrier website shopping."

Spalding also took issue with assertions in the article that consumers should forego inflation protection endorsements and lower limits on replacement value to reduce premiums. You can read Jon's letter here.
