Never underestimate the political advantage of beating up on the insurance industry. Passage in the House of a bill to repeal the limited antitrust exemption for medical insurers afforded under the McCarran-Ferguson Act was by a lopsided vote of 406-19. PIA's Ted Besesparis explains the circumstances surrounding the vote in an article in American Agent & Broker magazine. He notes that the repeal bill did not advance in the Senate, or get folded into the healthcare reform bills. Nevertheless, this one vote does not bode well for the insurance industry's image.
