Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon said he is likely to request next spring that the state Legislature allow his department's fraud investigators to carry guns in response to the recent deaths of two investigators in Ville Platte, Louisiana. He said the two deaths have prompted discussions by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners about arming insurance personnel who could be in danger or in risky situations while doing their jobs. Donelon said he has already met with State Police officials, representatives of the attorney general's office, and others about the details of equipping fraud investigators with weapons. The investigators would have to pass the Peace Officer Standards Training course, Donelon said, adding that "we are talking about a whole different set of skills" because most investigators have backgrounds in business and insurance rather than law enforcement.
