Decorate with Safety in Mind
Mississippi Insurance Commissioner and Fire Marshal Mike Chaney says homeowners should keep fire safety in mind as they decorate for the holidays. “First, never hang a stocking or anything flammable near an open flame, such as a fireplace, as it is a fire hazard,” he says. “More than any other time of year, this is when people need to be the most fire safety conscious and take steps to avoid the risks of electrical, cooking, and heating fires.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), between 2005-2009, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 240 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. These fires caused an average of 13 deaths, 27 injuries, and $16.7 million in direct property damage annually.
