AIA’s Farmer SC DOI CommissionerSouth Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) has announced that Ray Farmer will be the new Director of the South Carolina Department of Insurance starting on December 3. Haley said that Farmer’s strong background in the private sector was a key factor in his appointment, but the governor also cited his experience in multiple states and with multiple insurance lines. PIA National congratulates Ray Farmer as he begins his tenure as the South Carolina Insurance Commissioner. Farmer most recently served as vice president of the southeast region for the American Insurance Association (AIA) and served as deputy insurance commissioner of the enforcement division at the Georgia Insurance Department from 1971 to 1979. South Carolina has not had a permanent insurance commissioner since David Black resigned as director last December.

During his tenure at AIA, Farmer worked closely with PIA on a variety of issues. “I have known Ray for years and enjoy working with him,” said PIA of Georgia Executive Vice President Jerry Duke. “Above all, Ray is dedicated to both the industry and consumers, realizing that a positive environment is good for both groups. He is diligent and extremely knowledgeable. I’m sure he will be a great insurance commissioner and I wish him well on his new career.”
