PIA National is participating in the summer meeting of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in Atlanta August 11-14. The organization is expected to address topics raised by a new automobile insurance study group that is investigating the availability and affordability of auto insurance for low-income drivers. In addition to property/casualty issues, commissioners are expected to discuss their progress on implementing changes required under the Affordable Care Act, including the January 1, 2014 statutory deadline for states to set up a health insurance exchange.

The NAIC has not taken a formal position on the ACA, which the U.S. Supreme Court upheld in June. But NAIC President and Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty has said the organization intends to help states work to meet the ACA’s requirements. “We will continue to work to give regulators the tools they need to ensure a stable health insurance marketplace in the states,” McCarty said in a recent statement. “Where the ACA provides states with latitude, regulators will continue to work with insurers, consumer groups and the public to provide the best regulatory framework going forward.” PIA National Assistant Vice President of Regulatory Affairs David Eppstein, Esq. is representing PIA at the NAIC meetings.
