With the presidential campaign barreling forward, the Republican field still officially has four candidates – although Rick Santorum has “suspended” his campaign and Newt Gingrich, while not following suit, is sounding like he doesn’t really expect to win the GOP nomination.

Shortly before these latest developments, PIAPAC conducted a small, non-scientific straw poll of donors to the PIA National political action committee. Those surveyed were asked for their take on the GOP candidates.

Over 46% of surveyed donors gave the nod to Gov. Mitt Romney as their first choice of GOP candidates. This was a significant lead over the challengers, with Sen. Rick Santorum taking just 22%, Rep. Ron Paul with 20%, and Speaker Newt Gingrich with just 12%.

As for their second choice, the surveyed PIAPAC donors picked Sen. Rick Santorum with 32%. Speaker Newt Gingrich closed in with 29%, followed by Gov. Mitt Romney (22%), and Rep. Ron Paul (17%).
