While most dog bites do not result in insurance claims, the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) reports that in 2013 the number of dog bite claims increased almost six percent to 17,359. The average cost per claim was $27,862, up 45 percent over the last ten years, and dog bites accounted for more than a third of all homeowners' insurance liability claim dollars paid out last year. While standard homeowners' insurance policies offer coverage for dog bites, some carriers are charging higher premiums for certain dog breeds and will only cover claims if the owner has taken the dog to behavior classes. Dog owner liability varies from state to state, with some states holding owners responsible only if the victim can prove the owner knew the dog was dangerous or was careless in controlling it.
