MetLife is formally challenging the federal government's proposed designation of the insurer as "systemically important," the company disclosed October 3 in a regulatory filing. The company asked for "a written and oral evidentiary hearing to contest" the proposed determination. MetLife is the second firm to contest the Financial Stability Oversight Council's judgment. Prudential Financial became the first to exercise its right to challenge the proposed designation in a hearing before the council, but the bid failed, and it was formally named a systemically important firm in 2013 along with American International Group (AIG).
