David Eppstein, assistant vice president for regulatory affairs of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA National), said PIA supports regulation of navigators as well as federal legislation exempting agent commissions from the calculation of medical loss ratios (MLR). He made the remarks during an interview with Best’s News Service at the recent PIA Federal Legislative Summit (FLS).

“We support some limited regulation for navigators, of course realizing that they are not going to be required to get a full agent license,” said Eppstein. “But we do think some background checks and some minimal education requirements should be good for navigators, just to help protect consumers because they will be dealing with such sensitive information.”
