In a long article on MyNewMarkets.com, an Insurance Journal publication, PIA refutes statements made by Jeff Chesky, CEO of Insuritas, which is handling agency and policy details for insurance marketing by Overstock.com. When that effort was unveiled in May, Chesky was quoted as saying “Consumers don’t want a relationship with an agent or even a carrier.”

“Some of the erroneous claims made about agents — that the agency system is dead and consumers don’t want relationships with agents — we don’t agree with and have actual consumer data that is completely contrary to these claims,” said PIA National Executive Vice President & CEO Mike Becker, who was interviewed for the article. Becker cited findings by a personal lines study conducted by The PIA Partnership, showing that consumers have a strong preference for a personal relationship with their agent. He also noted that The PIA Partnership is conducting a similar study of small to midsize commercial lines consumers, which will be released later this year.
