Just two days after Walmart said it would start pushing auto insurance, another discount retailer, the online Overstock.com, announced the roll-out of a new insurance buying service.

PIA immediately issued a press release refuting statements made during the rollout of the Overstock.com program. Jeff Chesky, CEO of Insuritas, which is handling agency and policy details for Overstock.com, was quoted as saying “Consumers don’t want a relationship with an agent or even a carrier.” He said he believes the sales model of customers sitting down with an agent and discussing policies is dying.

“Insurance is not a cheap commodity that can be stocked on the shelves of any discount retailer,” said PIA National Executive Vice President & CEO Mike Becker. “Insurance is a contract to protect people and their property in the event of a loss. Insurance is serious business.” Our press release went on to detail research by The PIA Partnership, which found that insurance consumers want what Professional Insurance Agents offer.
