Boehner resigns

September 30, 2015

Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) shocked the political world by resigning both the speakership and his congressional seat. His resignation is effective October 30. Speaker Boehner had long been expected to stand down after the 114th Congress, but his speeded-up resignation seems to have been inspired by an expected challenge to his leadership within the caucus this fall, and the emotional visit to Congress by Pope Francis.

The abrupt change in House leadership may have ramifications for PIA’s legislative priorities, but at this point, with leadership elections pending, it is hard to assess what they might be. Going forward, whoever the new speaker is will also have a combative caucus to lead. This means there will likely be less compromise.

PIA’s legislative priorities are vital to our members! Although our legislative priorities often have bipartisan support, we must continue to fight to advance them, no matter who is in leadership on Capitol Hill. Right now, PIA is engaging with congressional offices to continue to push our policy agenda both before Speaker Boehner’s resignation comes into effect, and after a new speaker is put into office.
