The December 1 effective date for changes to federal law regarding overtime is just a few weeks away. The federal government, through the Department of Labor, is preparing to implement a new rule on that date that would grossly increase the minimum threshold for overtime pay.

The final rule doubles the salary threshold for exemption from overtime from $23,660 annually to $47,476 annually—higher than minimums set under any state law. The rule also automatically updates the threshold every three years without taking into account economic circumstances or stakeholder input.
