The start of peak hurricane season means home and business owners should take steps to protect their property—including being sure it is adequately insured.

“Having homeowners and flood insurance are two of the biggest steps you can take to safeguard your property from hurricanes,” said Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon. “Insurance is a tool for protecting property just as plywood or a generator are. If you wouldn't wait until the last minute to take those precautions, don't wait to make sure you are properly covered by homeowners and flood insurance.”

Donelon said that waiting until warning flags are flying
before buying insurance won’t work. “Know that most property insurers stop writing policies when a storm enters the Gulf of Mexico and most flood policies don't take effect until 30 days after you apply,” said Donelon, who offered additional hurricane preparation tips.
