Hurricane Maria

Two weeks after escaping the worst of the damage from Hurricane Irma, Puerto Rico suffered a direct hit from Hurricane Maria on Wednesday, an extremely dangerous hurricane that hit as a strong Category 4 storm. It had been a Category 5 system, and even downgraded, it packed powerful sustained winds of 155 mph and is the strongest storm to have hit the island in decades.

“We definitely dodged a bullet [with Irma], but Maria is not looking good at all,” said Ariel Rivera, PIA National Director from Puerto Rico, shortly before landfall.

Estimates of the costs, both insured and uninsured, from this year’s crop of killer hurricanes are still being compiled, but it is already known that the costs are in the tens of billions and rising, even before Hurricane Maria.
