A direct writer that launched several months ago in New York is seeking to expand nationwide in 2017. Lemonade said it has applied for licensing in 46 additional states and the District of Columbia. President and Co-founder Shai Wininger said in a statement the company’s “bots instead of brokers” model allows for rapid expansion. Reinsurers working with the new company include Lloyd’s syndicates. Earlier in December, Lemonade said that it raised $34 million in new venture funding to help expand its operations. The insurer charges a flat fee for premiums, and donates any unclaimed money to causes policyholders support.
