PIA of Wisconsin Executive Vice President Ron Von Haden commented on the use of so-called automobile "black boxes" in an article in the West Bend (WI) Daily News (12/5). The devices, patterned after the black boxes on airplanes that record flight data, are used to monitor the performance of drivers. They are being marketed to parents who want to keep track of the driving habits of their teenage children. Ron noted that while it is still very early, the use of the box could have financial consequences down the road. He said insurers also see the box as a potential aid in accident investigations and are looking at ways to tie use of the boxes to insurance premiums. Von Haden added PIA of Wisconsin has some concerns about the device and personal privacy.
