As a coalition member with Advocates for Auto and Highway Safety, PIA National has signed a letter urging the U.S. Senators to co-sponsor S. 1993, the National Highway Safety Act of 2003, introduced by Senator John W. Warner (R-Virginia) and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-New York). If enacted, S. 1993 will save thousands of lives and prevent hundreds of thousands of life-threatening injuries that occur every year as a result of motor vehicle crashes. This bill will increase national seat belt use by requiring all states, within three years, either to enact a primary enforcement seat belt law or achieve a seat belt use rate of 90 percent. Groups representing insurers, physicians, traffic safety organizations and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) also support S. 1993.
