On April 10, the PIA National Board of Directors unanimously adopted PIA National's new Strategic Long Range Plan (SLRP), a main priority of PIA National President Terry Adams.

For this important task, Adams turned to PIA National Director John Watson of Montana, appointing him chairman of a task force charged with coming up with the revised SLRP.

Watson, a three-term director who has held numerous leadership positions for the association and PIA Services, was chosen for his institutional knowledge of PIA National to guide this effort.  The task force members were selected from board members and affiliate executives to represent PIA's diverse organization.

The task force took an inclusive approach. It conducted surveys done by a professional survey firm that included PIA leaders, PIA affiliate executives and rank-and-file PIA members. The SLRP Task Force then worked with a professional facilitator and PIA staff to evaluate all the input. In addition, the task force collected and reviewed SLRP's from PIA state/regional affiliates.

The resulting final draft of PIA's new Strategic Long Range Plan was then developed. The SLRP is focused and concise. Rather than being lengthy and highly detailed, like planning documents can sometimes be, the PIA SLRP is a one-page document.  It shares that distinction with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), whose strategic long range plan is also a one-page affair.

"It says it all, short and to the point," said Terry Adams. "It is a roadmap for PIA's continued success. It's what PIA is all about."
