PIA's volunteer effort to encourage members to offer temporary housing for the families of insurance agents displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Katrina was noted in an article entitled "A Gulf in Our Hearts" in the October issue of The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE)'s Associations Now magazine. The article profiled various associations' efforts. PIA was the only insurance association featured. An excerpt form the article:

Shelter, in the form of "host homes," is exactly what the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA), Alexandria, Virginia, is asking for from its members. "While agency owners are getting temporary facilities up and running to help their clients process their insurance claims … [some] may need an alternate place for their own family members to stay," explains the organization, which has posted a sign-up form on its Web site. "PIA members in every part of the country who are able are being asked to volunteer to host the family members of agents in the impacted areas who may need a place to stay."

"Now is the time for all PIA members to come to the aid of their fellow agents," emphasizes PIA Executive Vice President and CEO Len Brevik. "Everybody knows that PIA members are local agents who help local people. We are asking members of the PIA family to pull together to help their Gulf Coast colleagues who are working to assist their clients in this time of need."
