PIA Senior Vice President Patricia A. Borowski participated in an informational conference on insurance held for gubernatorial staffers at the national headquarters of the Southern Governors Association (SGA) in Washington, D.C. on May 10. The SGA initiated the session to help staff members in the various governors' offices better understand insurance markets and how states can affect better market participation, especially following natural disasters. Other industry officials participating in the educational session were Marsha Cohen of the Reinsurance Association of America (RAA); Don Griffin of the Property Casualty Insurers of America (PCI); Neil Aldridge of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) and Eric Goldberg of the American Insurance Association (AIA).

The staffs of governors in over ten states participated in the conference, including Louisiama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Arkansas.

"The governors' staffs wanted to better understand how the business of insurance operates, especially in the aftermath of the kinds of natural catastrophes that are becoming more frequent," said Borowski. "These sessions, which will continue, are helpful in encouraging the kind of true public-private sector partnership that must exist in order to help our clients and communities rebuild after disasters."
