Just what attracts young people into the agency business or drives them away from it? What's it like for a 20-something or 30-something producer to work in an agency with older-generation family members?

These were among the topics considered by a panel of young agents arranged by PIA National. Their discussions are chronicled in an article in the July 2008 edition of Rough Notes magazine. Amary Beth Billot, Donna Chiapperino, Kim Harwood and Ryan Von Haden participated in the session, along with Vicki Rich, director of communications and public affairs for PIA of Ohio. Rich discussed a summer college internship program started three years ago that places college juniors and seniors in agencies and insurance companies.

Chiapperino discussed another major initiative to generate interest among young people in the insurance business - Project Y, a joint venture of PIA of New Jersey and the New Jersey Young Insurance Professionals. It includes brochures and Web site materials that project a glamorous image of insurance agents. "They look like Calvin Klein ads," said Chiapperino.
