PIA National President Robert Page spoke to North Dakota agents at their annual convention on Monday May 5 in Bismarck, North Dakota. Page gave a status update on PIA's efforts to oppose proposals for federal insurance regulation currently pending in Congress.

"It's easy to be negative and tear down someone else's concept of a remedy. However, PIA's message is positive," Page said. "We offer alternative, common sense solutions. The state system of insurance regulation works well. While it needs improvements and more modernization, it is not in any way 'broken.'"

Page said the National Insurance Producer Registry is an excellent example of successful state modernization. PIA is assisting the NAIC in bringing about the enhancements needed to the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) - the state-based system for one-stop licensing. "The NIPR licensing system has already been built, it is already funded, it is up-and-running in 47 states, and can be completed quickly," he said. "There's no need to reinvent the wheel. And reforming licensing through the NIPR keeps the states in control."

Page said PIA's battle plan is to continue to defend the superiority and the integrity of state supervision of insurance, counter the actions of those advocating for federal regulation and move with speed to finish the reforms to modernize the state system that are already making significant progress. He added all PIA members, together with their PIA affiliates, must present a united front to defend against "the kind of changes to the system now being proposed that threaten our businesses and the protection of our customers."
