While national legislation is forged in the halls of Congress, the ideas that are brought to Capitol Hill -- and that resonate the most with our lawmakers -- come straight from constituents like you. That's why it is imperative that every PIA member becomes involved in the federal political process and educate members of Congress, so they understand and appreciate the views of professional independent agents.

On Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, while Congress is on recess and our elected officials are back home in their district offices, PIA is asking each of its members to visit their members of Congress (or have them visit your office for a group meeting with your staff). On that day we hope each U.S. representative and senator is overwhelmed by visits (scheduled in advance) and online
communications by PIA members. Please make an effort to engage your elected officials and congressional candidates, and forge relationships with those who will serve them in Washington, D.C. The goal is to get as many PIA members as possible to schedule appointments to have a conversation with their elected officials or staff members in their offices.

This is your chance to talk about issues that concern you as an independent agent and small-business owner. We realize that some PIA members won't be able to meet with their elected officials on District Lobbying Day itself, but hope each will find a day near District Lobbying Day to make these very important visits.

District Lobbying Day is part of PIA Month. Each August, PIA members across the country schedule legislative visits and participate in political activities with the goal of advancing PIA's point of view when members of Congress are back home in their districts. Political Involvement and Advocacy Month, or as we like to call it, "Capitol Hill in Your Backyard,"is part of PIA's year-round legislative advocacy. Visits from constituents at home in lawmakers' districts are a powerful way to reinforce the work done year-round by PIA's Capitol Hill lobbyists.

If you can't schedule a meeting during August, you can send your member of Congress a pre-written, fully editable letter here. Letters on PIA's major issues are all there.
