The Agents' Division of the American Association of Crop Insurers (AACI) elected Larry McGillis as Chairman during their annual meeting last week. McGillis will serve as Chairman for the next year, attending AACI meetings in Washington, D.C.

The House and Senate Agriculture Committees will begin negotiations this summer and into 2012 on the new Farm Bill. "The good news," says McGillis is that "crop insurance is still supported by many in Congress. However with the huge national deficit and everybody looking for money for their favorite programs, nothing is protected."

McGillis said the last go-round of cuts in crop programs hasn't hit agents' bottom lines yet. "Some will see 35-65 percent cuts to their income, with more work required. Agents need to take heed or we'll lose more yet." Another concern for McGillis is the need to educate the House Agriculture Committee, where most of the members are new freshmen legislators. In addition, both the Senate and House Agriculture committees have new chairmen.

"We congratulate Larry on his election as agents' chairman at AACI," said PIA National President Fred Thomas. "Having a PIA member who is one of the country's top experts on crop insurance issues serving in this position will enhance the work of the PIA National Crop Insurance Working Group on which he serves, and benefit all agents who sell crop."
