PIA will bring Main Street to Capitol Hill during the 2011 PIA Federal Legislative Summit, March 30-31 in Washington, D.C.

The annual PIA Federal Legislative Summit (FLS) is a gathering of PIA members who come together in the nation's capital to meet with their elected representatives. It is an opportunity to meet/reacquaint yourself with your Members of Congress and to demonstrate to them that you are willing to take time out of your busy schedule to travel to Washington, D.C. to discuss issues that are of importance to independent insurance agents.

PIA National President Fred Thomas said PIA members participating in the summit will tell their Members of Congress that America's professional insurance agents remain unalterably opposed to federal regulation of insurance, and are against a so-called optional federal charter for insurers and producers. "Our support for state regulation of insurance remains steadfast, along with our opposition to federal encroachment into our industry and our businesses," he said.

PIA members will also urge their Representatives and Senators to support legislation to exempt health insurance agent commissions from the medical loss ratio (MLR) formula that will be used by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to calculate allowable expenses under the 2010 healthcare reform law.

FLS Schedule of Events

The 2011 PIA FLS begins on Wednesday, March 30 with an in-depth issue briefing and Q&A at The Westin Alexandria. A special "early bird" briefing will be held Wednesday morning with a comprehensive issues briefing to be held Wednesday evening. The following morning, participants will gather for a kickoff breakfast.

Legendary author and award-winning journalist Bob Woodward will deliver the keynote address at the 2011 PIA Federal Legislative Summit. Woodward will speak during the March 31 kickoff breakfast. His topic will be "From Nixon to Obama."

Agents spend the remainder of the day on Capitol Hill meeting with lawmakers. Following the day of lobbying on the Hill, all FLS participants are invited to a reception, sponsored by The PIA Partnership. The Professional Insurance Agents Political Action Committee (PIAPAC) will also hold its annual PIAPAC Fundraising Dinner later that evening. The PIAPAC speaker will be Gary Walters. Mr. Walters worked at the White House for over 30 years, and was the Chief Usher there from 1986-2007. The Chief Usher is the top residence staff position at the White House.

"In some nations around the world, attending a Federal Legislative Summit could cost you your life," said PIA National President Fred Thomas, alluding to the recent violence in the Middle East. "But in the United States of America, it only costs us our time and the commitment to ensuring our own business success. It is a small price to pay, and we must always be glad to pay it."
