PIA members from around the country brought Main Street to Capitol Hill March 30-31 in Washington, D.C. during the 2011 PIA Federal Legislative Summit. In scores of meetings with members of Congress, PIA members expressed opposition to federal insurance regulation, advocated for repeal of the expanded 1099 requirement in the healthcare law and proposed that a study of insurance regulation by the new Federal Insurance Office be defunded.

"This year's summit was well received by our members who participated and their advocacy was productive," said PIA National Government Affairs Committee Chairman Gary Blackwell. "It is gratifying that in the days after our meetings, Congress finalized action on one of our top priorities, repeal of the expanded 1099 requirement. In addition, we express our appreciation to Rep. Judy Biggert (R-Ill.), the chairwoman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity. PIA leaders held a meeting with Chairwoman Biggert and were pleased with her receptiveness to our issues and how informative she was on her plans for this Congress."

PIA members also urged lawmakers to support H.R. 1206, the Access to Professional Health Insurance Advisors Act of 2011 by Reps. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) and John Barrow (D-Ga.). The legislation clarifies that producer compensation will not be considered as part of medical loss ratio (MLR) calculations under the healthcare reform law enacted last year.
