PIA National President Andy Harris addressed the 2013 Annual Convention of the Maine Insurance Agents Association on April 29 in South Portland, Maine. Harris noted that a lot has happened since he gave his first speech as PIA President, including Superstorm Sandy hitting New Jersey, where his agency was at ground zero of the storm. He noted that his agency kept operating, serving clients for two weeks on emergency power.

“PIA members were out there, helping out, doing the grunt work alongside our clients who were struggling to put their lives back together,” said Harris. “Let me ask you this: Did you happen to see any geckos out there helping Sandy victims? Did you see any cavemen? No, I didn’t think so.”

“Customers come to us for the personal relationship, advice and counsel that direct writers and captives are not equipped to deliver,” Harris said. “Independent agents are there when you need us. We are the real good neighbor, not only at the time of sale, but for each and every small challenge or family disaster!

“How many times have you insisted that coverage be bought rather than simply following the instructions of a poorly informed customer?” Harris asked the agents. “Would a computer screen do that? Think about how many people had correct coverage because the independent agent insisted that they carry coverage that they might not have purchased online.”
