WASHINGTON, September 2, 2005 -  The National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) has issued a call to members of the association from across the country to offer temporary housing assistance as needed to independent agents in the areas damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Some insurance agencies, especially in New Orleans and southern Mississippi, have been destroyed or damaged. While the agency owners are getting temporary facilities up and running to help their clients in processing their insurance claims, some have also suffered damage to their own homes.  Some of these insurance agents may need an alternate place for their own family members to stay.  PIA members in every part of the country who are able are being asked to volunteer to host the family members of agents in the impacted areas who may need a place to stay.

"Now is the time for all PIA members to come to the aid of their fellow agents," said PIA executive vice president and CEO Len Brevik. "Everybody knows that PIA members are local agents who help local people. We are asking members of the PIA Family to pull together to help their Gulf Coast colleagues who are working to assist their clients in this time of need."

The Alexandria, Virginia national office of the PIA is working with the PIA state affiliate offices in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to coordinate the volunteer effort.

PIA member agents in any part of the country who are interested in volunteering to accommodate families of agents in need of assistance are asked to fill out an online form on the PIA website.

Founded in 1931, PIA is a national trade association that represents member insurance agents and their employees who sell and service all kinds of insurance, but specialize in coverage of automobiles, homes and businesses. PIA will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2006.
