Oxendine Thanks PIA Agents for Their Help and Input

PIA of GeorgiaATLANTA, September 29, 2006 - Georgia Insurance Commissioner John W. Oxendine reaffirmed his support for professional insurance agents during the keynote address at the 10th Annual Education EXPO held September 26 in Atlanta by the Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) of Georgia.

Oxendine said he will not be among the state attorneys general who sign on to recent controversial proposed settlement agreements with insurance companies, such as Zurich, which require that agents use a court-mandated form to disclose current and future commission levels to their insureds. He stated that has "has no plans to require Georgia's agents to take part" in the disclosure and felt it "served no worthwhile purpose."

The national PIA on September 15 filed a friend-of-the-court brief in U.S. District Court objecting to aspects of the proposed settlement involving Zurich Insurers, because the disclosure form is flawed and the settlement also attempts to ban incentive compensation.

Oxendine added that the Georgia PIA is a valuable resource. "Every agent needs to be a member of a professional association. When I have concerns or need input, I always know I can turn to PIA for help and direction," Oxendine said.

"PIA of Georgia appreciates the continued expressions of support from Commissioner Oxendine," said PIA of Georgia President John T. Franks.

PIA's Education EXPO features nationally recognized speakers utilizing a two-day format that annually draws over 975 participants. The September 26 event was the largest single-day session, drawing 561 attendees. Collectively, this year's Atlanta event and one in Macon will have provided a total of over 15,500 CE credits.

Also taking part in this years EXPO was Dr. William Hold, president of the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research. Dr. Hold bestowed CIC, CRM and CISR designations on attendees from seven states and Georgia - the largest single event attended by the National Alliance.

PIA of Georgia is affiliated with the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents. Founded in 1931, and celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2006, PIA is a national trade association that represents member insurance agents and their employees who sell and service all kinds of insurance, but specialize in coverage of automobiles, homes and businesses. PIA members are Local Agents Serving Main Street America.
