WASHINGTON, April 20, 2006  - Peter Thornton, CIC, vice president of the Thornton Agency in Parsippany, New Jersey, has been named the 2006 PIA National Young Insurance Professional of the Year. The award was presented by the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) and was sponsored by Rough Notes magazine.

The PIA National Young Insurance Professional of the Year Award recognizes outstanding achievement by an individual under age 40. The award was presented during a luncheon ceremony April 8 in Arlington, Virginia.

"I've been reading a lot lately about how much George Washington shaped the office of the presidency, and how lucky America is that it chose well the first time," said PIA National Secretary/Assistant Treasurer Kenneth R. Auerbach, Esq., who presented the award. "Likewise, I'm proud that PIA chose so well when it selected the first national YIP of the Year."

"By selecting Peter Thornton as the 2006 PIA National Young Insurance Professional of the Year, PIA demonstrates the high level of commitment and achievement this award is designed to reflect," Auerbach said.

The PIA National Young Insurance Professional of the Year Award was sponsored by Rough Notes magazine. The President & CEO of the Rough Notes Company, Walter J. Gdowski, attended the ceremony.  In announcing the inauguration of the award in January, Gdowski noted, "Attracting more young people to join our industry is a critical mission. We are pleased to join with the PIA to recognize the outstanding young insurance professionals who are making our industry their career choice."

"Encouraging young people to consider a career in the independent insurance agency system must be a top priority for all of us," said PIA National President Ray L. Peretti, himself an agency owner. "We are particularly pleased to partner with the Rough Notes Company in this important effort."

Founded in 1931, and celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2006, PIA is a national trade association that represents member insurance agents and their employees who sell and service all kinds of insurance, but specialize in coverage of automobiles, homes and businesses. PIA members are Local Agents Serving Main Street America.
